Marty Tod and Fran Watts at the first overlook on the GH Trail

Saturday December 31,  Strays will ride out from the Hawthorne end of the Gainesville Hawthorne Trail. We will ride from Hawthorne to the Gainesville end of the trail, at Boulware Springs, mostly on the trail (except for a mile on 234 to get to Tims Fast Nickel) and then back. This is 32 - 34  miles. We may stop at the scenic overlooks if anyone is interested.

Meet in Hawthorne at the trail parking lot at 10 am for a 10:15 departure.

Ride speed range 6 - 28 mph, varying with terrain.

Average speed in recent times has typically been approaching 14 mph, but there may be a bit of lethargy due to post holiday bulk retention. This ride is pretty flat.

Their will be a convenience store / rest room opportunity at about the 10 and 20 mile points on this ride.

No pace lines, no wheel sucking, no racing, just a fun social ride.

Helmets are REQUIRED on all Strays rides, mirrors recommended, headphones forbidden.

Safety protocols are always observed on Strays rides.
If you have not ridden with the Strays before, please read this.

After the ride the hungry will head for a restaurant, in all likelihood it will be PJs, unless we have to wait too long for seating, in which case it could be either Cracker Boys or Sonnys.

Hope to see you on the ride.

If you haven't been to the Hawthorne end of the GH Trail:

From Gainesville, find your way to Hawthorne Road (SR 20) heading East out of town.

As you approach Hawthorne, SR 20 will turn into a construction zone.

Follow the signs to U.S. 301 South.

If you can, just before you get to 301, turn right on Johnson St. (the post office is on the corner). Take Johnson several blocks through downtown to SE 71st Ave, turn right. The trailhead is a couple of blocks down on the left.

Or from 301 heading south (a right turn off the SR 20 "ramp"), turn right on SE 69th Ave (CR 2082), cross the railroad tracks, turn left on Johnson St., then turn right on SE 71st. Ave. The trailhead is a couple of blocks down on the left.
