This may be 
stating the obvious, but...

Regardless of whether it's legally required 
or not, it is probably a good idea to carry it just in case you are dropped or 
otherwise separated from a group, hit by a car or attacked by some other means, 
and rendered unconscious. 

That being said, whether or not law 
enforcement personnel can demand that you surrender such identification for 
inspection without some sort of probable cause is a different debate.
