New Study
Predicts that 75% of American Adults Will be Overweight by
2015
According to a recent study released
by the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, if the increase in obesity
and overweight continues at its current pace, 75 percent of adults and 24
percent of children will be overweight or obese by
2015.
The study, which was promoted in a July 10th press release from
the JHU School of Public Health
and included data from a number of national
surveys, also stated that many low-income minority groups are
disproportionately affected by this epidemic. According to study
co-author May A. Beydoun, "Obesity is likely to continue to increase, and
if nothing is done, it will soon become the leading preventable cause of
death in the United States."
Additionally, the study found
that:
-
41% of adults in
America will be obese by 2015.
-
66% of U.S. adults
were overweight or obese in 2004.
-
80% of African
American women over the age of 40 are overweight and 50% are
obese.
-
16% of children and
adolescents are overweight and 34% are at risk of becoming overweight in
2003-2004.
