House Farm Bill Contains Anti-Obesity Grant
Program
On
July 19,
2007, the House Committee on Agriculture passed the new Farm
Bill, which now awaits final action in the house. Title IV of the Farm Bill (HR
2419) establishes a nutrition education and promotion initiative to
address obesity among low-income Americans. Under the Initiative, select
public and private organizations will receive a collective $10 million per
year in federal grants to execute programs that:

Are geared toward individuals in households with incomes at or
below 185 percent of the poverty level;
·
incorporate scientifically-based strategy to improve diet, and
·
withstand an outcome evaluation, including data collection.
The
program would expire in 2012.
