House Farm Bill Contains Anti-Obesity Grant Program

On July 19, 2007, the House Committee on Agriculture passed the new Farm Bill, which now awaits final action in the house.  Title IV of the Farm Bill (HR 2419) establishes a nutrition education and promotion initiative to address obesity among low-income Americans.  Under the Initiative, select public and private organizations will receive a collective $10 million per year in federal grants to execute programs that:

·        Are geared toward individuals in households with incomes at or below 185 percent of the poverty level;

·        incorporate scientifically-based strategy to improve diet, and

·        withstand an outcome evaluation, including data collection.

The program would expire in 2012.  For more information on the Farm Bill and this provision, click here.
