Study Finds Obesity is Spread through Social
Networks
Obesity seems to be contagious, spreading from
one person to another in the same social network, according to a major new
study by Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School that will be published
tomorrow in the New England Journal
of Medicine.
The study tracked over 12,000 people for more
than 32 years to determine that an increased risk of becoming obese is
transmitted from wives to husbands, brothers to brothers, and friends to
friends when one of the individuals in the relationship is obese.
Some experts have lauded this study as
“groundbreaking” and believe it will spur further research; some others
have voiced skepticism that any causal relationship has been
