Study Finds Obesity is Spread through Social Networks

Obesity seems to be contagious, spreading from one person to another in the same social network, according to a major new study by Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School that will be published tomorrow in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study tracked over 12,000 people for more than 32 years to determine that an increased risk of becoming obese is transmitted from wives to husbands, brothers to brothers, and friends to friends when one of the individuals in the relationship is obese.

Some experts have lauded this study as “groundbreaking” and believe it will spur further research; some others have voiced skepticism that any causal relationship has been identified.  To view a more detailed article about the study, click here.
