  • HOUSE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION AND LABOR TO HOLD HEARING ON NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND

    The House Committee on Education and Labor will be holding a hearing on the “Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act” – also known as “No Child Left Behind” – at 10 am on Monday, September 10th.  The hearing will be held in 2175 Rayburn House Office Building and the witnesses have yet to be announced.

    The “No Child Left Behind” (NCLB) Act is set to expire at the end of the year and provides a critical vehicle for Congress to promote active, healthy living this year.  To this end, it is important to alert the Committee on Education and Labor on changes needed to “No Child Left Behind” prior to Monday’s hearing. Please write the committee leadership and encourage them to support the two bills described below.

    ·        Funding a pilot program studying the most effective ways to improve healthy living and physical activity outcomes; and

    ·        Requiring schools to report on the quantity and quality of physical education offered to students on student report cards.

    ·        Promoting safe passage to and from schools on foot and by bicycle;

    ·        Supporting programs outlined by the Safe Routes to School Program; and

    ·        Encouraging participation in regular physical activity and the development of habits promoting life-long physical fitness.
