COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION AND LABOR TO
HOLD HEARING ON NO CHILD LEFT
BEHIND
The House Committee
on Education and Labor will be holding a hearing
on the “Reauthorization of the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act” – also known as “No Child
Left Behind” – at 10 am on Monday, September
10th. The
hearing will be held in 2175
Rayburn
House
Office
Building
and the witnesses have yet to be
announced.
The “No Child
Left Behind” (NCLB) Act is set to expire at the
end of the year and provides a critical vehicle
for Congress to promote active, healthy living
this year.
To this end, it is important to alert the
Committee on Education and Labor on changes needed
to “No Child Left Behind” prior to Monday’s
hearing. Please write
the committee leadership and encourage them to
support the two bills described below.
The “Fitness
Integrated with Teaching (FIT) Kids Act”
(H.R. 3257)
The
FIT Kids Act
introduced by Representatives Kind [D-WI], Wamp
[R-TN] and Inslee [D-WA] would promote physical
activity in schools
by:

Providing incentives for
schools that meet national standards for physical
education;
·
Supporting professional
development for teachers and principals to promote
healthy lifestyles and physical
activity;
·
Funding a pilot program
studying the most effective ways to improve
healthy living and physical activity outcomes;
and
·
Requiring schools to report
on the quantity and quality of physical education
offered to students on student report
cards.

H.R. 3438 as
proposed by Representative Linda Sanchez
[D-CA]
The
legislation introduced by Rep. Sanchez (along with
Reps. Bordallo [D-GU], Boucher [D-VA], Cohen
[D-TN], Davis [D-IL], Green [D-TX], Hare [D-IL],
Hinojosa [D-TX], Holt [D-NJ], Jackson-Lee [D-TX],
Ortiz [D-TX], Slaughter [D-NY] and Wynn [D-MD])
would amend the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and
Community Act (part A of Title IV of NCLB) to
promote physical activity
by:

Promoting safe passage to
and from schools on foot and by
bicycle;
·
Supporting programs
outlined by the Safe Routes to School Program;
and
·
Encouraging participation
in regular physical activity and the development
of habits promoting life-long physical
fitness.
