The upcoming reauthorization
of the “No Child Left Behind” Act provides lawmakers an
excellent opportunity to expand and promote physical
activity in
America’s
schools.
There are several legislative options for
amending the bill, which is set to expire at the end of
the year, to promote physical activity in schools,
including:
·
Providing incentives
for schools that meet minimum physical activity
requirements;
·
Supporting
professional development for teachers and principals to
promote physical activity and healthy
lifestyles;
·
Requiring schools to report on the quantity and
quality of physical education on student report
cards;
·
Promoting safe passage
to and from school on foot and by bicycle;
and
·
Supporting programs
outlined by the Safe Routes to School
Program.
