1 – Senate HELP Committee Hearing on Childhood Obesity

On Wednesday, July 23rd, the Subcommittee on Children and Families will hold their second hearing on childhood obesity in the past week.  The hearing, entitled “Childhood Obesity: The Declining Health of America’s Next Generation – Part II” will take place at 2:30 pm in Room 430 of Dirksen Senate Office Building.

Testifying at the hearing will be:

*          Joseph Thompson, M.D., M.P.H., Surgeon General, State of Arkansas, Director, Arkansas Center for Health Improvement, Little Rock, AR

*          Jonathan Miller, Citizen, Ypsilanti, MI

*          Philip J. Dwyer, President and CEO, Central Connecticut Coast YMCA, New Haven, CT

*          Susan Neely, President and CEO, American Beverage Association, Washington, DC

2 - Education and Labor Committee Hearing to Promote Physical Education and Health Promotion

On Thursday, July 24th, the Committee on Education and Labor will hold a hearing entitled, "The Benefits of Physical and Health Education for Our Nation's Children".  The hearing will take place at 10 am in Room 2175 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Witnesses at the hearing include:

            *         The Honorable Ron Kind, Congressman from Wisconsin

            *         The Honorable Zach Wamp, Congressman from Tennessee

            *         Richard Simmons, Fitness Expert and Advocate

3 – Healthcare Leadership Council to Host Health Care Innovations Event

On Thursday, July 24th the Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC) will be hosting its annual Health Care Innovations Event in the Cannon Caucus Room from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  This event is held every year on Capitol Hill for members of Congress and congressional staff to witness the new tools, technologies, and practices being displayed by HLC member companies and organizations. 

The Healthcare Leadership Council is a coalition of chief executives from all disciplines within the health care system and provides an exclusive forum for the leaders of our nation’s health care system to jointly develop policies, plans, and programs to achieve their vision of a 21st century health care system.  Wellness and prevention are among HLC’s top issue priorities, and as such, HLC is an Advisory Board member to the Campaign to End Obesity. 

Organizations presenting at the Innovations event include the Campaign to End Obesity, Aetna, Ascension Health, Baxter International, Cardinal Health, Cleveland Clinic, Hospira, Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Marshfield Clinic, McKesson Corporation, and Premier, Inc.

A complimentary lunch will be provided.
