USDA Secretary Vilsack: Reform School Meal Programs

In an interview with CongressDaily, USDA Secretary Vilsack signaled his intention to overhaul and streamline some of the nation’s most critical nutrition programs.  Continuing his previous pledge to improve access to healthful and nutritious foods, Secretary Vilsack said, “you have to continue to improve access and you have to figure out a way for those meals to be more nutritious.”

Congress is set to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act later this year which, among other items, dictates the size and scope of the before, during and after school meal programs.  As part of this effort, the Senate Agriculture Committee has announced that they will hold a hearing on reforming the in-school child meal programs.  The hearing will be held on Tuesday, March 31st at 11:30 am.
