Senator Bingaman (D-NM)
Introduces “Obesity Prevention, Treatment, and
Research Act of 2009”
Senator Bingaman has re-introduced
his legislation that would, among other things,
provide obesity-related services under federal
health programs and would fund projects that
promote increased physical activity and healthier
lifestyles. The bill provides for the
collection of obesity-related data and provides
for the analysis of the data and the issuance of
reports. A new Council on Overweight &
Obesity Prevention would be created that would
develop strategies to comprehensively prevent,
treat, and reduce overweight and obesity.
This year’s version would require
the newly-established Council to make
recommendations for obesity-related information,
including BMI, to be included in electronic health
records (EHRs) for the purpose of ongoing
surveillance and monitoring. In addition,
Bingaman added a provision that would require the
Department of Health and Human Services to provide
State agencies that administer federal-state
health programs, with data, information and
recommendations regarding the risks associated
with childhood obesity. The Senator hopes to
get many of these provisions included in health
reform legislation.
