I know about CIC.  Spent three years on a Spruance class destroyer.  A friend of mine was a Sonarman on a SpruCan off of Lebanon.  The sonar shack is just off of CIC on a SpruCan.  He was disturbed on fine day by daylight coming through the bulkhead in several neat holes.   Turned out the "armor" wasn't worth a thing and small arms fire could just punch right through.

The Navy's solution?  They put kevlar "bras" on the SpruCans.   Might be one of the reasons they were decommed early...

What you have just described is the Combat Information Center (or whatever the current nomenclature may be) - a heavily armored space well inside the hull on most every combat vessel the US Navy has in commission.

The Bridge is pretty much relegated to shiphandling now, though never let the Captain here you say so.

I have long scoffed at the idea of Star Wars with their flying bridge design on a pedestal high above the rear of the ship.  If I were an adversary that would make quite the tempting target.

I will not be surprised that US Navy warship design transitions away from a bridge in such an exposed area with the exception of peacetime sailing.  Con and combat operations would in my vision be controlled from a space deep inside the hull.  I think you're on the right track Doug.

LOL!

As soon as I saw that Mongoose’s Fighting Ships not only had the Tigress (!), not only the Plankwell (!!), but also the Kokirrak-class (!!! one of which we have at Tavonni!) I knew I HAD to buy this book.  ;-)  ;-)

I never thought anyone would ever map out the thing. Sorta like Marc probably thought no-one would ever stat all the worlds in the Imperium, let alone the Imperium and all surrounding empires.  %-O

In the Traveller lecture I did recently I showed that off (after explaining what a UWP was) along with travellermap.com.  You could hear the collective jaws of the audience drop.  It was a real Total Perspective Vortex moment.

I still love Jennell Jaquays’ comment to me that she’s surprised no-one has come up with better, more interesting ship pics than the ones she drew up at her kitchen table 30+ years ago…

Ah, well that's because she drew the real things.  I mean those ARE the ships! :-)
