If you sacrifice realism for drama, space combat can be very exciting. But you have to sacrifice so much realism that it really doesn't have much to do with space combat anymore.

I'm reminded of a scene from one of Iain Banks' Culture novels. A lone human is a passenger on a very advanced, very deadly warship that gets into a battle with dozens of inferior enemy warships. The AI controlling the ship invites the human to view a virtual environment to watch the battle. Almost faster than she can follow, the ship selects and acquires targets, chooses and fires weapons, evaluates resulting damage, and prepares the next salvos. At some point she asks, somewhat bewildered, "Are we winning?" The ship laughs and replies "This is a recording, slowed down by a factor of 1000. I'm just showing off how well I did. We won the actual battle before you had time to enter the VR." (All very roughly paraphrased from memory.)

I dunno, the space combat I've run in the current T5 game has been a lot of fun for the players.

Of course, that's RP-level play, so...

The fundamental problem with space combat (in Traveller, or elsewhere) is that space is typically a ridiculously boring tactical environment, and adding vector movement doesn’t make it more interesting, it just makes it more difficult to implement on a non-electronic map.

???

Squadron Strike isnt that old.

Have you looked at how Squadron Strike  handles 3D, or are you just making assumptions?

If you were saying, "I tried Squadron Strike and I didn't like it," or "Squadron Strike is the wrong engine for Traveller," I could accept that. Some kind of specific criticism?

There are a bunch of previews of Squadron Strike: Traveller up on COTI, if anyone is interested. It's a new Traveller space combat game.

Meh... It is a old game with a new facing..... Adding the "3rd" dimension is a cumbersome mechanic.
