That strategy being to create a "buffer"/"crumple zone"?  I mean, it
makes a kind of sense if you assume that Europe will continue to produce
crazy dictators once a century or so, who will make ill-advised runs at
Russia, and that you'd rather someone *else* do most of the bleeding and
dying before winter comes along and shuts everything down, as usual.

(And if Germany has to be reduced to pre-industrial serfdom just to be
absolutely sure they can never threaten the Motherland again, with a
corresponding reduction in population, well, that's just the cost of
security (to be borne by them and/or paid in confiscated factory
equipment), right?)
