 are great for the 'Saracen head' course (alternating
 side
 targets at 5-6' height.

 Short spears are great for
 ground targets, i suspect the same with
 straight swords.

I recall reading that 'lancers' would throw away their lances when engaging cavalry.
The lances were for use against infantry & were particularly useful when used against infantry deployed in a 'square'.
