Dear Subscriber,
Thanks to all of you who responded to the writer's cry for help in fact-checking his Victorian novella. I passed along your info - I haven't heard from the writer since, so I hope he found a "match."
I'm happy to announce that the Victorian Times Quarterly for April-May-June 2016 is now available for purchase on Amazon, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.ca. See below for the link to this volume.
Alert readers may note that this volume is labeled "#8" whilst the last one was labeled "#3." I'm in the midst of creating Quarterlies to replace the two six-month collections that I issued back in 2014/2015, so all the subsequent Quarterlies will be renumbered to reflect the addition of these four "prequels," so to speak. If you've already purchased a quarterly, no worries - only the numbers have changed. (I am also adding an article index for the year to each December quarterly.)
Finally, there's good news for those who just can't get enough of Victorian Times - it's getting bigger! This issue marks our expansion to 50 pages of content per issue. That makes the downloads just a wee bit larger as well, however, so please be patient when accessing the magazine.
And now, here's what we have for August:
- In an English Deer Park (Century Magazine, 1888) A delightful article that takes you on a summer stroll through a classic British parkland, where you'll encounter deer, pheasants, badgers, and a host of other birds and beasts - plus meet the squire and his dogs.
- Sights and Scenes of the New World: The Queen of the Mexican Gulf (CFM, 1884) The author's search for "rustic" America leads her to Galveston, Texas - which she finds not so rustic at all!
- The Requirements of a Yachting Cruise (CFM, 1877) Tips for lady readers who may be asked to accompany their spouses to sea.
- Model Menu for August (GOP, 1893) What to offer for this month's dinner party.
- In the Donkeys' Dairy (The Strand, 1895) Even in Victorian days, few people knew that London had its own "donkey dairy," where asses' milk was gathered for a variety of uses (particularly medical).
- Roumanian Work (GOP, 1894) Interesting techniques combining colored and gold threads.
- Some Home-Made Effects (GOP, 1895) Ideas for dressing up a fireplace mantel.
- The History of Home: Domestic Ways Since the Times of Henry VIII. (GOP, 1887) Part 2 of this 4-part series looks at domestic life in Elizabethan days.
- Shopping in "The States" (CFM, 1892) An American shares a glimpse of America's great department stores, where payments whiz across the ceiling from clerk to cashier on a network of wires, and just about everyone chews gum...
- Through the Heated Term (Ingalls' Family Magazine, 1888) Tips on keeping one's home cool during the summer (in the days before A/C), and recipes for the hot weather (including Green Corn Pie and Imperial Pudding).
- Children of 1000 Years (The Strand, 1893) Pictorial feature of children's costume through history.
- August Lore (ILA, 1846) Country lore, customs and feast days.
- A Military Tea-Party (CFM, 1877) "The wives and children of the private soldier are no longer huddled out of sight; their existence and their needs are recognized by the State..." and the great event of the year for military families is the official military tea and picnic!
- Odds and Ends (GOP, 1896) A fascinating round-up of news, notes and trivia from around the Victorian world.
- Poetry - The Sad Story of Blobbs and His Pullet
