BAA Comet Section email list Nick James 02 May 2020 21:28 UTC

Welcome to the new BAA Comet Section discussion list!

The existing BAA email list was becoming more and more unreliable with
many mails bouncing or ending up in spam traps. The BAA has recently
upgraded its main server so I have taken the opportunity to move this
list to a service provided by simplelists. This is the provider used for
many other BAA lists and they seem to be reliable.

The archives of the old list are available from here:

https://britastro.org/node/21866

To post to this new list please use baa-comet@simplelists.com. The old
address no longer works. Attachments are allowed but please use them
sparingly.

I have transferred all of the addresses from the old list but I was not
able to set things up for those peple who prefer digests rather than all
mails. Please contact me privately if you would prefer to receive digests.

We are going through an exciting time as far as comets are concerned.
Those of us in the far north are keeping our fingers crossed that C/2020
F8 (SWAN) will perform when it crawls above our dawn horizon in Mid May.
Those in the south can attest that it is already a very nice object. It
would be a nice consolation since our other hope, C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS),
fragmented about the time of my BAA webinar and it is now limping along.
Both arrive at perihelion around the same time at the end of May and
both are in Perseus.

Let's hope for clear skies over the next few weeks.

Nick James. Director BAA Comet Section.
