29P-SW1: Second most intense outburst since 2010 February 02 rmiles.btee@btinternet.com 22 Nov 2022 18:47 UTC

Within the past 24 hours or so, the peculiar Centaur object
29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 has undergone its second most intense outburst
for more than 12 years.
We know this thanks to imaging by Patrick Wiggins from Utah (Obs Code 718).
Here are my measurements of his very recent images:

Expressed in terms of the intensity of reflected light from the new outburst
coma, the change in brightness is equivalent to about 160
nucleus-equivalents.
By comparison, the intensity of the event of 2010 February 02 was some 200
nucleus-equivalents.
N.B. The unprecedented outbursts of 2021 September 26-27 equated to 350
nucleus-equivalents of new ejecta reflecting sunlight.
Other than these three dramatic events, the next brightest outburst since
2010 February has equated to 90 nucleus-equivalents.

Clearly the present cryo-eruption deserves follow-up.
More observations are to be encouraged.
