Yeah wow Puncturevine really exploded this year statewide!

I’m a big fan of my Makita battery powered Hand Vac (https://www.amazon.com/Makita-XLC02RB1W-Compact-Lithium-Ion-Cordless/dp/B018S0VT4O/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=makita+vacuum+18v&qid=1574383504&sr=8-6) for sucking up dropped seeds and I have used it on puncturevine, but only can do small areas at a time.

I would try some sort of raking up seeds into piles, but would need to find a rake with fine enough tines.

I like the foam board pad idea and had never thought of that.  Trying to gather up the seeds with gloves is a nightmare…..

Hi all!
Does anyone have any tips for San Diego Audobon on puncture vine removal? Here’s the question:
Just started helping at an Audubon bird nesting restoration site which has a major, new puncturevine infestation. Unfortunately, the nesting season coincided perfectly with puncturevine germination and seed production so now they’re faced with trying to remove hundreds of thousands of puncturevine seeds before the site is closed again starting next March. Can you post this question for me on CalWeedTalk?
Does anyone have a creative solution for large-scale removal of puncturevine seeds at a recently infested site? The site has sandy soil and few native plants in the affected area. The usual method of stomping the seeds onto a piece of carpet or foam pad would require several thousand hours of volunteer labor so we need some alternative ideas.

You can also contact Meghan: (flaherty@sandiegoaudubon.org) and Susan Mason (smason908@gmail.com ) directly.

Many thanks!
Dana

This stuff is awful. Around here in Hidden Meadows I’ve learned to recognize it when it is young and whenever I see it I pull it. Up here we (many people pitching in)have used hula hoes, brooms and dustpans, small hand weeders. I use long Grangettos protective gloves or if they aren’t pokey yet and are damp, even Costco gloves. Actually every kind of glove- I even have avocado sleeves and nice comfy kneeling pad on top of a tarp and plastic basket/tub. Good luck. Just keep at it and have faith- each spot you do will be so much better next year. “Slow and steady wins the race.”” Beginning is half done.”
