A significant non-native invasive plant was discovered Friday and confirmed yesterday. This is possibly only the third record of Parthenium hysterophorus - Santa Maria feverfew from California. However, there is a record from last year in the Santa Ana area. Friday's was a single plant growing along the upland, sandy, disturbed margins of San Diego Creek Channel, near the San Joaquin freshwater marsh. Unfortunately, the species is a prolific seed producer and over 1,000+ seed were present or already dispersed on this plant before it was removed.

Please keep on the lookout for this new threat to our wildlands. It is about a two toot tall summer annual and prefers disturbed soils, in similar environments to those enjoyed by Russian thistle and five-hook bassia.

Details of this record can be seen on Calflora: http://www.calflora.org/cgi-bin/noccdetail.cgi?seq_num=po22783
Additional images are available on CalPhotos: http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/img_query?rel-taxon=begins+with&where-taxon=Parthenium+hysterophorus
Please report any sightings to Orange County CNPS: invasives@occnps.org.
