SOCALLANDMGRS@list.audubon.orgA significant non-native invasive plant was discovered Friday and confirmed yesterday. This is possibly only the third record of Parthenium hysterophorus - Santa Maria feverfew from California. However, there is a record from last year in the Santa Ana area. Friday's was a single plant growing along the upland, sandy, disturbed margins of San Diego Creek Channel, near the San Joaquin freshwater marsh. Unfortunately, the species is a prolific seed producer and over 1,000+ seed were present or already dispersed on this plant before it was removed.
Please keep on the lookout for this new threat to our wildlands. It is about a two toot tall summer annual and prefers disturbed soils, in similar environments to those enjoyed by Russian thistle and five-hook bassia.
