Internship Position on Santa Catalina Island -

American Conservation Experience (ACE), a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the Catalina Island Conservancy (CIC), is seeking 1 Conservation Program Intern to dedicate 6 months to be a part of a high functioning restoration program on Santa Catalina Island in Los Angeles County.  Internship term is flexible but tentatively scheduled for July 5th to December 2017.

The ACE intern will work independently or with a team of up to six people and will be building and maintaining fence lines, conducting native plant restoration by extensive watering of outplantings, surveying for and controlling invasive plant species across the island using chemical and manual control methods and assisting with data management across plant projects.

Fencing - this internship’s primary duty is to maintain exclosures erected to protect native plant populations from non-native ungulates and they will perform fence inspections and repair on a weekly basis.

Nursery – the intern ensures that watering, fertilizing, pest management, pruning, weeding, and preparing soil media are performed accurately and according to daily and seasonal schedule. They will maintain general care of horticultural tools, and technical equipment and assist with watering restoration sites. They will keep the Nursery facilities clean and tidy at all times.

Invasive plant management - systematically locate, map and control invasive plants in rugged, remote areas. All pesticide applications will be supervised by certified pesticide applicators among Conservancy staff.

Interns will receive $200/week living allowance, dispersed bi-weekly. Housing is provided by the CIC at no cost to the Intern. There is also an opportunity to apply for an Americorps stipend and tuition reimbursement.

Position involves functioning in both field and office environments.  Field work involves manual labor; hiking long distances over rugged terrain and through dense scrub; and routine handling of plants.  Field work requires the ability to drive project vehicles both on and off road and handle pesticides. You must be able to backpack, lift and/or move up to half your body weight.
