I really like New Scientist.  Concerned with science and technology, it covers many topics briefly, fewer in depth, and is accessible.  I don’t have a science degree, but I once had to do undergraduate science collection development and it was handy for book reviews.  Plus, it was just enjoyable leisure reading.  I recommend it.

It’s pricier than Science News, but it’s a weekly.  Go to their website and have a look - www.newscientist.com.

In the interest of full disclosure, I do not now, nor have I ever had, any relationship with New Scientist further than reading.

Enjoy!!

Subject: [SERIALST] Alternatives to Science News and Scientific American

I don’t think I’ve seen this question in the discussion.

Does anyone know of an equivalent journal? One that covers several scientific areas and has short articles that still have some serious material. Our school serves a range of students and Science News is a good one for those just beginning to attempt college work. But certainly doesn’t have enough material to justify that price when they also take advertising.
