I second the recommendation. I have a personal
subscription to New Scientist, and while it is a little pricier, I think around
$100, it is great for a weekly read.
There is a an aggregator of blogs that cover peer-reviewed science
publications, I think mostly written by academics, but often given popular
treatment, at http://researchblogging.org/.
I haven't vetted this set of blogs, but it might be worth a link, if a free
electronic resource would do the trick. This is what they say about
themselves: This is the news blog for ResearchBlogging.org, which strives to
identify serious academic blog posts about peer-reviewed research with an
aggregation site where others can look to find the best academic blogging on
the Net.

I really like New Scientist. Concerned with science and
technology, it covers many topics briefly, fewer in depth, and is accessible.
I don’t have a science degree, but I once had to do undergraduate
science collection development and it was handy for book reviews. Plus,
it was just enjoyable leisure reading. I recommend it.
It’s pricier than Science News, but it’s a
weekly. Go to their website and have a look - www.newscientist.com.
In the interest of full disclosure, I do not now, nor have I ever
had, any relationship with New Scientist further than reading.

I don’t think I’ve seen this question in the
discussion.
Does anyone know of an equivalent journal? One that covers several
scientific areas and has short articles that still have some serious material.
Our school serves a range of students and Science News is a good one for those
just beginning to attempt college work. But certainly doesn’t have enough
material to justify that price when they also take advertising.
