We have a subscription to the CJVR and also get pdf delivery for a few other titles.  We save the pdfs and make these available electronically via the catalogue.  That being said, pdf delivery of articles is not the industry norm and causes more hassle/work for both library staff and users, among other problems.  I've expressed by concerns to the CJVR folks; they listened politely but I don't know if anything will change.

We at the Alaska State Library do receive issues of a few periodicals by email, but we limit these to ones that are critical to our collection and mission, such as some important Alaska-related periodicals.  Except for those few, we generally cancel subscriptions when publishers decide to make only pdf’s available to subscribers – we can almost always find a good replacement.  In the case of those few delivered as pdf’s,  we print and shelve them, but we don’t have any that would be as lengthy as the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research.  We receive periodicals delivered as pdf’s in a separate email account that we established, in part, for this purpose.

We do not have a subscription to this title.  We cannot accommodate PDF files at our Library because we don’t print PDF copies due to budgetary constraints.  I didn’t think about copying it to a CD-ROM.  Again if we copy to CD-ROM that is an extra charge for the CD’s.

Thanks,

Vicky

Subject: [SERIALST] Is anyone receiving e-mail subscriptions?

My library has recently discovered our longstanding subscription to the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research has changed from print to online, but the online delivery methods are problematic for us.

The current issue can be found on the publisher’s website but it requires a password to access it, and this is not feasible for an institution with our enrollment.

The publisher also sent us a copy of the issue as an email attachment to us, with these instructions:

Our method of sending this journal to you each quarter will be in PDF-format.  Please note that it is permitted for you to put it onto your intranet or Web site with password protection, and/or print a copy and bind it, or alternatively, you can copy the PDF to a CDROM for circulation among library patrons.

This title is also being made available on PubMed Central but the most recent issue of this quarterly will not be available there, so if we want our patrons to have access to it, we need to make the email version available in some way.

We were interested in finding out if other libraries have dealt with the issue of e-mail serial subscriptions, and how they decided to make it available to their public.

Thank you,
