ALCTS webinar: RDA and Cartographic Materials: Mapping a New Route

Date: September 28, 2011

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.

Description: The announcement by the national libraries that RDA will be implemented has led catalogers of all material formats to gear up to new ways of doing things with RDA. Catalogers of cartographic materials are no exception. This session will help attendees in relearning the intricacies of mathematical data areas, learning how to apply the new 3XX fields, and understanding the “take what you see” principle. Take a different route toward creating bibliographic records for maps.

Attendees will review changes and additions from AACR2R practices, with just a little background on FRBR as it might apply to cartographic materials.

Audience: Those experienced in creating bibliographic descriptions using Chapter 3 of AACR2R and Cartographic Materials: A Manual of Interpretation for AACR2, 2002 Revision, Second Edition.

Presenter: Paige G. Andrew, a graduate of the University of Washington (MLS, 1986), is the faculty Maps Cataloging Librarian and a member of the Maps Cataloging Team, Cataloging and Metadata Services Department, Pennsylvania State University Libraries (1995- ). Formerly, he was the Maps and Nonbook Materials Cataloger at the University of Georgia Library (1986-1995). Author of Cataloging Sheet Maps, the Basics, as well as other publications on issues related to cartographic materials cataloging, Paige has also been active in both the creation of, and revision to, cataloging standards.
