Hi Sharlene,

If Springer serves the same inaccurate citation metadata to OpenURL link resolvers, than this could be a much bigger problem.  I don't know how a link resolver would be able to resolve an OpenURL that contains contradictory metadata about the referent -- in a machine-actionable world, v. 1:9 (1966) of Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics simply doesn't exist.

Maybe Springer needs to appreciate that mission-critical library systems such as link resolvers rely on accurate citation metadata as much or more than researchers and librarians, who have the cognitive elasticity and information literacy to work around these issues.

The journal title Attention, perception & psychophysics is available via SpringerLink from 1966 to date. However, prior to 2009 the journal titles was simply Perception & psychophysics; and when exporting citations for pre-2009 articles the new (and in this case inaccurate title) is utilized.  Here’s an example:

Reference Type: Journal Article

Author: Fraisse, Paul

Primary Title: Visual perceptive simultaneity and masking of letters successively presented

Journal Name: Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics

Cover Date: 1966-09-01

Publisher: Springer New York

Issn: 1943-3921

Subject: Behavioral Science

Start Page: 285

End Page: 287

Volume: 1

Issue: 9

Url: http://dx.doi.org/10.3758/BF03215789

Doi: 10.3758/BF03215789

I contacted SpringerLink and they didn’t think there was anything wrong with this.  In the Academic setting this might well confuse a researcher.

I’m sure there are others that are similar.  What can we do to prevent this?
