We bind some titles.  The rest that we keep I put in cardboard shelf files and label each the way I would a bound volume (i.e., with just title, volume, and year).  I consolidate it in the item listing, too.

The cardboard shelf files come in a variety of sizes (except no longer any 3” wide by 7” deep).  Different companies have different sizes, so check Gaylord, Demco, and Highsmith for what you need.  I keep an assortment of 6, 7, 9, and 10” deep and 2, 3, and 4” wide on hand.   They come flat so they’re easy to store.

We too have been cutting back on binding.  Now one of my problems is how to shelve these loose issues.  I have a stash of boxes, in a variety of sizes, from a company called Magafile out of MO, but they are no longer available.  Do you use Princeton files, have you found anything enclosed on the top or in a variety of sizes?

Thanks,

Sally

We cut ours drastically a few years ago also.

Basically what I did was learn to stop worrying.

Yes, I was horrified and afraid at first also, but honestly, my fears did not come true, not even the small ones.  We do shelfread steadily, and had said if there were problems, we would begin to bind whatever title it was again.  But we’ve not had to do any.

We do, however, tattletape.  All issues.  Always have.

The times they are a-changing, that’s for sure.  Good luck!

Hi Everyone,

Our binding budget will be cut this year.  I’m not sure by how much or if it will totally be cut.  What have you all been doing instead of binding?  Sending loose issues to the bound shelves when there normally would have been a unit big enough to bind?  If you do this, do you put tattle strips every issue?  Right now, we only strip the titles that tend to “walk off,” even though they still go missing.  What other options are there besides shrink wrap?

Thanks!

Mykie
