Metadata and Digital Collections Librarian - Career Opportunity, Washington, DC

The Research Library at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System is seeking a Metadata and Digital Collections Librarian. 


The Mission

The Environment

Research at the Federal Reserve Board is data intensive and time-sensitive.  The Research Library, with a full-time staff of 13, offers a full array of desktop and customized library services to the 2,000 staff members at the Board. Over 400 of the Board's staff are Ph.D. economists, and many more support the research process.  The Library plays an integral role in the work of the Board, with more than 82% of the staff in the three primary research divisions utilizing the Library’s services. 

Position Description

 

The Metadata and Digital Collections Librarian creates and manages descriptive metadata in multiple databases for diverse materials, including traditional print and digital collections as well as unique datasets and their licensing terms.  Additionally, the librarian is responsible for the evaluation, licensing and acquisition of selected library-purchased electronic resources. 

 

The librarian performs original and complex copy cataloging in all formats in accordance with current national cataloging rules and format specifications.  Working with a colleague, the librarian also creates and maintains metadata describing free and licensed datasets in the library catalog and other databases, an activity which includes developing in-depth records describing the products and their licenses, as well as substantive authority work.  She/he contributes to taxonomies both internal and external to the Library.

 

The librarian also shares responsibility for new and renewal negotiations with vendors for selected library-licensed content, and provides user and library perspectives to the Board’s Legal Division as they resolve license and contract issues.

 

Position Requirements

 

The position requires demonstrated knowledge of original and complex copy cataloging standards and practices, such as MARC21, Dublin Core, FRBR, FRAD, RDA, AACR2-R, LCRI/LCPSs, LCSH, and LC classification schedules.  Knowledge of integrated library systems and an awareness of emerging standards and information technologies in the metadata and electronic resources management area are required.  Demonstrated knowledge of electronic resources acquisition processes, including vendor negotiations, also is necessary.

 

The position requires impeccable attention to detail and the ability to manage competing projects.  Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential. Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills, sound judgment, and initiative are required. The librarian should enjoy working collaboratively as part of a team while at the same time be able to work efficiently and effectively as an individual.

The Metadata and Digital Collections Librarian reports to the Chief Librarian; the position is non-supervisory.

The position is being advertised both at the FR-24 and FR-25 levels.  

 

At the FR-24 grade level, the incumbent must have a Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent experience and 2 years of related experience.  At the FR-25 level, the incumbent must have a Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent experience and 3 years of related experience.
