First - our sincere condolences go out to Birdie and her family. She played a crucial role in facilitating communication in our field and we owe her a great debt. Our thoughts are with her family.

As you may know, in 2014 the American Chemical Society is introducing a bold and comprehensive program of Open Access initiatives. The program consists of four main components, many of which are already available:

ACS Central Science - A new, highly selective peer-reviewed journal covering the broad spectrum of chemical sciences—free to readers and authors—to be introduced during 2014.

ACS Editors' Choice - Free public access to new research of importance to the global community—one article every day—available now atpubs.acs.org/editorschoice

ACS Author Rewards - Published Corresponding Authors receive credits for each article published in 2014, which they can use to fund any ACS open access option through 2017.

ACS AuthorChoice - Enables authors to facilitate open access for a one-time fee—now expanded to include Creative Commons licenses, discounts, Certified Deposit, and more.
