Hi,

Actually HT does list the volumes out, both separately in a catalog search and on the main record.

http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/ls?a=srchls;anyall1=phrase;q1=%22monthly%20review%22;field1=title;op3=AND;yop=after&facet=format:%22Serial%22

http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/010395122

But as you can see on the catalog record, the individual volumes are listed randomly. If you have a long list and copy/paste into Excel, then sort, you get into that whole sort order problem, as:

v.1

v.10

v.11

v.2

v.22

v.25

v.3

v.30

A patron looking for one specific volume in one title can probably negotiate it. To go through several hundred titles and compare volume for volume would be an unpleasant task.

Thanks,

If HT does not list the single volumes, how does the user search for this in HT? Sorry to be ignoramus about this; thanks for help.  I was thinking of getting a quote for HT, and getting rid of bound volumes, but I don’t think we can afford it.

Diane,

We are in a similar situation. We haven’t made a decision to join HathiTrust but it is something we are seriously considering, and I already have an analysis from HathiTrust in hand of our holdings and how much it’d cost.

The only situation where we currently do what you describe, that is withdraw backfile bound volumes due to having an online archive available, is for JSTOR. JSTOR is different but there are significant annual fees to pay for them, too. We are just committed to continuing to make those payments :-)

My advice is  to weigh the costs of ongoing storage and maintenance (if you are able to quantify that) vs. the annual cost of HathiTrust. In other words, the storage and maintenance of bound journal volumes is low cost but not free. And if you (like us) have no room for growth, this heightens the issue. Also in our view, joining HathiTrust is kind of like a lifestyle decision for a library; it’s more than just buying into an archive. It’s a strong commitment that has multiple factors to it.

Not particularly novel or out-of-the-box advice, I realize.

Subject: [SERIALST] HathiTrust and withdrawing periodicals

Hi everyone,

My institution is considering joining HathiTrust and it’s very likely we will, if we can work through the Shibboleth issue.

Question to you all is, what do you think about withdrawing periodicals covered by HT? I mean, not art-intensive or otherwise valuable titles, but your general pre-copyright, very dusty and deteriorating volumes that it seems nobody will ever look at. The old literary review type magazines, especially.

I know that HT is an on-going subscription rather than a purchase, but we’ve had them run analysis on our holdings and the price isn’t that bad.  Colorado College is solid when it comes to financial situation. So I’m not too worried about having to cut that subscription in the future.

We would obviously check HT for coverage when considering withdrawing a title. I don’t know about trying to check for every single volume since HT doesn’t list them conveniently.

So I’m just appealing to the collective wisdom here and if anybody else has undertaken such a project please share your experiences and workflow.

Thanks,
