What I often do in a case like this is put the volumes chronologically, with appropriately-labeled informational dummies.  For this one, you could put a dummy at the beginning because “Developmental” and “Autism” both come before “Mental.”  Keep the actual titles alphabetical on their own lines, apart from the non-title words, like this:

EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN AUTISM

AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

is shelved immediately after

EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN

DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

which is shelved immediately after

EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN

MENTAL RETARDATION IN

DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

When I discard larger books, especially some of the reference books of which we retain only the most current volume, I save them, cover them with paper, and put labels on them when I need them.

Subject: [SERIALST] Chronological vs. ABC?

Hi all,

Would you say it is better to keep a title that keeps changing their name slightly in alphabetical order or in chronological order?  Specifically, we have a title that started out as:

"Education and Training in Mental Retardation."

"Education and Training in Mental Retardation in Developmental Disabilities"

"Education and Training in Developmental Disabilities"

"Education and training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities"

That is the chronological order.  If we were to put them in ABC order, it would go:

"Education and training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities"

"Education and Training in Developmental Disabilities"

"Education and Training in Mental Retardation."

"Education and Training in Mental Retardation in Developmental Disabilities"

Which is better?  Thanks!
