Associate Director for Collections

Villanova University

 

Falvey Memorial Library seeks a strategic, collaborative, and highly motivated individual to lead its programs to develop and steward general, special and archival collections in support of teaching, learning and research at Villanova University.

 

Reporting to the University Librarian & Director of Falvey Memorial Library, the Associate Director for Collections (AD) develops and implements a vision for the development, discovery and delivery of information resources of all types and formats. The AD collaborates with library staff, Villanova community, consortia partners, donors, funding agencies, and other library/higher ed. organizations to identify opportunities for developing strong collections and enhancing access to and preserving content. The AD establishes policies and procedures for lifecycle management of collections.

 

S/he manages the materials budget. The AD leads collection development, acquisitions & licensing, metadata, special and digital collections, and university archives operations in support of library and university priorities. S/he manages and develops staff in the directorate and fosters programs of collections knowledge development across the organization.

 

As a member of the Library’s senior leadership team, the AD shares responsibility for strategic planning, policy development, financial planning, governance, and the development of major library initiatives.

S/he leads and contributes to programs and initiatives of Falvey Library, Villanova University, and professional organizations, as appropriate.

 

Qualifications:

·         MS/MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution required.

·         Evidence of success in leading and managing organizational change. Strong commitment to diversity and a leadership style that is transparent and inclusive.

·         Experience in strategic planning, budgeting, and establishing/managing external partnerships.

·         Proven record of collaborative problem solving and facilitating cross-organizational cooperation in service of user needs.

·         Extensive experience in the development and management of scholarly information resources.

·         Demonstrated knowledge of copyright, intellectual property, licensing, and scholarly communication issues.

·         Significant understanding of best practices and current trends in both digital and physical resource management and preservation.

·         Awareness of metadata standards and tools as well as issues in archives, rare books, and special collections.

·         Demonstrated ability to set priorities, exercise flexibility in meeting objectives, and effectively manage multiple projects and assignments.

·         Excellent organizational, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, including ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues.

·         Experience in grant writing and/or donor stewardship is preferred

 

 

Environment:

Falvey Memorial Library is situated in the heart of campus and is central to academic life at Villanova University. Falvey, which has approximately 50 FTE, was the university library recipient of the ACRL 2013 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.  The Library has developed both VuFind, an open-source ILS discovery layer that has been adopted internationally, and VuDL, an open-source digital library management software, in an effort to aid its users and scholars world-wide to access its print and electronic resources in excess of 1,000,000 volumes.
