Dear Jason,

I would catalog and shelve this item in the way that would maximize usage, which in our  library would be as a monographic series.   Otherwise, why go through the effort of cataloging it?

Subject: [SERIALST] Cataloging and shelving single journal issues

Hello,

A staff member recently posed an interesting question.  We were donated a copy of a journal composed or stories and poems.  It's just one issue, and we have no others.  She would like this individual copy added to our collection, and asked if it should be cataloged and shelved with the periodicals or books.

My first inclination would be since it's a periodical, it should be cataloged and shelved with the periodicals.  Are there any good arguments for shelving a single journal issue with a general collection of books?

Thank you for your insights.
