There was a useful discussion back in May 2015 on this aspect (see Athena Hoeppner’s posts: http://lists.eril-l.org/pipermail/eril-l-eril-l.org/2015-May/author.html and especially http://lists.eril-l.org/pipermail/eril-l-eril-l.org/2015-May/000107.html). For now I am tracking all three metrics to get a perspective on how the change to COUNTER R4 impacts on usage. Moving forward I think we might just record what the national reporting body requires (over here it is SCONUL – you would probably go with what ACRL requires for databases, if any)

As many of you know, the latest version of COUNTER (R4) added new metrics to the DB1 reports.  The metrics included now searches, result clicks, and record views.   I have the definitions of what they are and the differences, but I am interested in what others are tallying for their data collection.  We used to tally regular searches but result clicks and record views seem a more accurate reflection of use to me.  Have any of you grappled over this and come to a conclusion of which metric you think is the best reflection of use for your library?
