ALCTS e-Forum: From Behind the Scenes to Front and Center: Social Media for Technical Services and Collection Development Librarians

As librarians, we are well aware that social media can be a valuable tool for promoting collections and connecting with our patrons. Yet when much of the current literature is focused on how libraries can use social media for event promotion, reference, and/or readers’ advisory, where are Technical Services staff to look for tips on how to effectively use social media for highlighting their work and the hidden gems that reside in their library's collections? Please join us as we discuss policies, procedures, and best practices for using social media to showcase library collections in an engaging way as well as the work that goes on behind the scenes to make these materials available for use.


Moderators

Andrea Tomlinson is the Technical Services Librarian at The Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Library of Chemical History in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She holds an M.L.I.S from Drexel University and has been a librarian for over twenty years. Part of a team of librarians and archivists, she provides content for various social media platforms for the Othmer Library including the library’s blog Othmeralia. (http://othmeralia.tumblr.com/)


Victoria Orzechowski is a Librarian at The Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Library of Chemical History in Philadelphia, PA. Her responsibilities include administration of the library’s Tumblr blog, Othmeralia and Pinterest page (pinterest.com/othmerlibrary). She earned her M.S.L.I.S. from Drexel University in 2013. She co-authored an article on Tumblr in collections outreach titled “Going Viral: Using Tumblr for Special Collections Advocacy and Outreach” in the Journal of Digital Media Management, 2016, vol. 4, no. 4.


What Is an e-Forum?

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.
