I agree. While we would leave the bibliographic holdings in their true form, we cater our holdings statements that are in our Alma holdings records to be as consistent as possible across our catalog. Holdings record statements are local holdings, so I think it is fair to modify and display them as you see fit for your patrons.

 

 

 

I think you would have to think of your end user and what would be easier for them to understand to enable them to find what they are looking for. This isn’t Germany. Your cataloguing in English. These library rules are not cast in stone. I think its fine to break these rules to meet the needs of patrons…..

I would like to see how other libraries are handling their serials.

 

With foreign language serials:  When we cataloged these journals long ago, we didn't use the numbering as it appeared on the piece. ( i.e.:  Jahrg.1: Heft 2...we would use v. 1, no.2.)  Our library system that we used at that time only supported v., no., and pt.   We changed to Voyager, and now using Alma, we now have this capability.  

 

When cataloging a new serial, we are told to check the 362 field, and use this form of our holdings.  Which yes, I know this is being done.   But for the older cataloged records, with the 362 being:  32. Jahrg., Heft 19 (10. Juli 1929)-  our holdings shows:  v.32, no.19(1929)-.

 

Are libraries changing the old way to the new way.   Changing the holdings to match the 362?       

And if so, do they update the barcodes and remark their books.

 

I was always under the impression that you follow the pattern that was already establish since serials can change all so often.

 

Would you have any comments on this?
