I have received several comments in response to my query. Thanks to all of you for your thoughtful comments. We will probably take action on these comments in the future. Just as an Fyi on some of the comments – It is primarily a supervisory position. There are 2 staff under this position currently and two more by this summer. There is a lot of responsibility under this position, but not all of it will need equal attention.  

Kearney is a great town in south central Nebraska. It is located 2 hours from Lincoln, the capital, and 3 hours from Omaha. A 5-6 hour drive will get you to either Kansas City or Denver. Great town to raise a family. We are in the midst of the Sand Hills Crane migration, which happens every spring. Half a million cranes stopover here each year before flying north to their mating and nesting grounds. Quite an event to see!

Job Description or Duties: 

The Coordinator for Virtual Library Services provides leadership and guidance on all Library information technology issues. S/He oversees the planning, implementation, management, supervision, operations, security, and continuity of all of the technology resources of the Library which provide access to an extensive range of online information resources. Working with other Library staff, the Coordinator supports Library faculty and staff, the Learning Commons, as well as local and remote Library users, in the use of existing information technology as well as the identification and adoption of new and emerging technology resources. The Coordinator represents the Library to campus Information Technology Services and plays a key role in making the Library a campus technology leader. This position supervises at least four staff members including Managerial Professionals for Web Services, Workstation Support and the Integrated Library System (ILS); Office Service staff working with the Institutional Repository (IR) and with Electronic Resource Collections.

 

This is a twelve-month, tenure track appointment with assistant or associate professor rank, depending upon experience. The Coordinator for Virtual Library Services reports to the Dean of the Library and, along with the Coordinator for User Services and the Coordinator for Collection Services, is a member of the Library Management Team.

 

Areas of responsibility include: Overseeing all aspects of the life cycle of the Electronic Resources Collection and the implementation and continued development of the Institutional Repository. Providing leadership and guidance in the development and maintenance of a dynamic and user-centered Library Website, and the Library’s ILS hardware, software and associated peripherals. Providing leadership, guidance and any needed Workstation Support assistance in the development and maintenance of information technology services in an effective student learning environment. The person in this position takes a leadership role with Library Marketing initiatives and, along with other Library faculty, lends expertise regarding Open Educational Resources and Copyright.

 

Additional Responsibilities: Performs other duties related to Library technology as needed to accomplish the goals of the Library and the University. Works hands-on and troubleshoots when necessary. Engages in scholarly and service activity as required for tenure and promotion. Represents the University of Nebraska at Kearney IR, ILS, and ER within the University of Nebraska Consortium of Libraries. Compiles, reports, analyzes and assesses appropriate statistics for areas of responsibility. Works with other Library and University technology staff to develop a disaster plan focusing on recovery and service continuity.  Provides research help in-person and online to a diverse student population, including regularly scheduled evening and weekend duties during the semester. As liaison to specific departments, develops collaborative ongoing relationships with faculty, students and staff in support of teaching, learning and research; provides information skills instruction and collection development support. Represents the Library on appropriate UNK, NU System, state, regional, and national committees. Works to further enhance the Library’s priority, and reputation, for providing outstanding customer service within a welcoming, friendly, and collegial environment. Supports the general recruitment and retention goals of the University. Fulfills other tasks as assigned by the Dean.

Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited master’s degree or international equivalent in Library or Information Science. At least two years of relevant experience in an academic Library with evidence of broad, in-depth knowledge, skills, and experiences with technology. Evidence of successful supervision and management of full time Library personnel.

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to work toward achieving tenure and promotion. Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with library and campus colleagues. Experience with each of the following: Electronic Resource Management, Institutional Repository, and with an Integrated Library System. Understanding of Web Services, Workstation Support and Marketing in an academic library. Effective interpersonal and written communication skills. Understanding of the issues involved with Open Educational Resources and Copyright. Evidence of the ability to concurrently manage multiple projects and staff, administer systems, troubleshoot computing problems, plan and manage change in the library’s computing environment, and act as liaison with other information technology professionals. Ability to work independently. Knowledge of cataloging principles and experience with metadata standards, such as MARC and RDA. Experience with one or more of the following: XML/XSLT, Apache, Linux, MySQL, and a programming language such as PHP. Experience with digitizing and editing images, text, video, audio, and other formats and delivering them on the web. Ability to converse in a second language.
