Thanks for your response.  Your approach sounds similar to what we do now.  Our faculty are real good about getting items back quickly.  We don't have many of them taking advantage of this option.

We have a special container with a temporary barcode.  We give all the checkout and item details to the serials technician so they can monitor the return.
