ALCTS webinar: Supporting OER at Your Institution

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 AM Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 PM Central, and 2 PM Eastern time.

Description: Open Educational Resources (OER) initiatives in higher education are increasingly led by academic libraries. A lot of these projects are overseen by librarians who may or may not have OER as part of their job responsibilities yet they make it work because of their strong commitment to making education accessible to all learners.

The three speakers will discuss the variety of ways that they support the adoption, adaptation, and creation of OER on their different campuses at the administrative, faculty, and student level. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to OER, so this webinar will present a range of ideas that could work at any institution, including: trainings and outreach, faculty grants, learning communities, campus partnerships, publishing support, regional events, and summits. The speakers will share strategies that have and haven’t worked for them. They’ll also talk about their experiences as members of the Open Textbook Network and OpenStax Institutional Partners Program, two national organizations that support OER work on campuses. They’ll also discuss barriers to OER adoption and ways to overcome them.

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will have a workable roadmap for starting and/or expanding an OER program on their campus. They will gain a deeper understanding of the strategies, techniques, and methods to advocate for, promote, and support OER at the administrative, departmental, and individual level. Participants from small, medium, and large organizations will all come away with inspiring ideas to bring back to their local environments.

Learning outcomes:

1) Begin or enhance an OER program at their institution.

2) Gain new ideas for specific strategies that would support OER at their institution.

3) Discuss challenges and solutions to OER adoption in higher education.

Presenters:

Cheryl Cuillier is the Open Education Librarian at the University of Arizona and coordinates the library's textbook affordability initiatives. She is one of the instructors in the Open Textbook Network’s Certificate in OER Librarianship.

Regina Gong is the Open Educational Resources and Student Success Librarian at Michigan State University. She has extensive experience in building, implementing, and managing OER projects beginning with her successful tenure as OER Project Manager at Lansing Community College and now at MSU Libraries. Regina serves on the SPARC Open Education Advisory Group and in the Steering Committee.

Jeremy Smith is the Open Education and Research Services Librarian at the UMass Amherst Libraries. He is responsible for managing all library efforts around OER on campus and is involved with regional and national OER efforts. He is also the library liaison to the Journalism and Communication Departments. His previous position in the library was manager of a grant-funded project to digitize the entire W.E.B. Du Bois manuscript collection, housed in the UMass Library Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA). Prior to acquiring his Masters in Library Science (MLS) in 2009, he was a staff producer and editor for the Media Education Foundation (MEF), a Northampton-based non-profit video production company founded by UMass Communication Professor Sut Jhally.
