I would add that you can most easily maintain automatically-generated records for your aggregator ejournals if you maintain separate records.

I too suggest separate records in Alma. Primo does a pretty good job of merging them so patrons can see print and e- holdings together.

We have just moved to ALMA and keeping separate records for different formats have saved us a lot of work and headaches.

When searching the catalogue, the facets and filters offer more accurate results if the records are separate and the fixed fields are correct to the format.

It is worth it, especially in the long run should your system change.

Hi Maria,

We have lots of piggybacked records and we are now in the process of migrating to another system, ALMA. All of our e-resources have been separated from the print resources in the new system, so if I was starting out, I would go with the separate record per format method.

Hi,

Our print Serials collection is not in use right now, due to the pandemic. We are adding more individual e-journals, as students and faculty request them. I am wondering:

  • What are the benefits and drawbacks of separate e-journal catalog records vs. attaching the e-journal record to the print record?
  • How do you handle yours – separate records or not?
  • What are your workflows for successful individual e-journal cataloging?

I’m just starting out with managing individual e-journal subscriptions. Any cataloging tips would be appreciated.
