The Library of Virginia is seeking a talented, creative, and energetic
individual to serve as lead cataloger for the Virginia Newspaper Project.
The goal of the Project, an integral part of the United States Newspaper
Program, is to locate, identify, catalog, and preserve the wealth of
newspapers housed in repositories throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
As part of a talented seven-member team, the lead Cataloger will catalog a
range of historically important newspapers published in Virginia and the
United States and will assist in identifying and recommending titles for
conservation treatment and reformatting. The Lead Cataloger will also assist
in developing and implementing a comprehensive statewide fieldwork
initiative, working closely with a wide variety of academic and public
libraries, historical societies, museums, and other educational
institutions. The Lead Cataloger will also contribute significantly to the
project�s online database, digital-exhibition, and other web-site programs.

The successful candidate must have a Masters Degree in Library Science and
Certification by the Virginia State Library Board (or pending
certification); should also have considerable knowledge of technical
processing, bibliographic utilities and local library systems; of serials
cataloging, AACR2 and CONSER guidelines; of US Newspaper Program cataloging
procedures; demonstrated ability to interpret serials cataloging rules and
records; and a working knowledge of Virginia publishing history. Knowledge
of basic desktop computer applications (database, spreadsheet, Windows 95,
html, etc.) preferred. Must possess the ability to work independently, as
well as effectively as a team member. An equivalent combination of
education, training and experience may substitute for the above
requirements.  Must pass a security background check.
