POSITION: Senior Serials Cataloging Librarian

AVAILABLE: Review of applications to begin April 6, 2000

DESCRIPTION: The University of Kentucky Libraries seeks a creative,
patron-oriented serials librarian to serve as Senior Serials Cataloging
Librarian, a full-time, tenure track position. The successful candidate
will manage cataloging services related to print, non-print, and
electronic serials for the William T. Young Library. The University
Libraries will be migrating from NOTIS to the Voyager system in June 2000.
The Senior Serials Cataloging Librarian will be actively involved in the
implementation activities associated with the migration.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Serials Team Leader, the Senior Serials
Cataloging Librarian will directly supervise a staff of three (including
one professional) and possibly student assistants; coordinate serials
cataloging services within the William T. Young Library; serve as liaison
with system-wide library staff on issues related to serials cataloging;
lead staff in planning, prioritizing, and monitoring the unit's workflow
and procedures; perform original and complex copy cataloging for all
serial formats, including electronic resources; assist staff with complex
problem solving; participate in Serials Team planning, administration, and
move toward team-based management; serve on library committees; be an
active participant in system-wide decentralization efforts; keep abreast
of serials cataloging rules and trends; evaluate the potential use of new
services and technologies.

QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED): Accredited MLS; 3 or more years of professional
serials cataloging experience in a variety of formats; thorough knowledge
of relevant national standards (i.e., AACR2, LCRI, CONSER serials
cataloging rules, MARC21, LC Subject Headings, LC Classification);
experience with OCLC or other national bibliographic utility; recent
experience with an integrated automated library system; evidence of strong
supervisory, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and communication
skills; ability to work independently and in teams in a rapidly changing
environment; ability to view issues from a library system-wide
perspective, foster teamwork, and stimulate cross-functional
collaboration; evidence of ability to meet requirements for promotion and
tenure and commitment to ongoing professional development and activity.

QUALIFICATIONS (PREFERRED): Experience with Voyager and/or NOTIS system;
relevant experience in an academic research institution; knowledge of
metadata and markup languages; reading knowledge of one or more western
European languages.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The University of Kentucky Libraries system includes the
central William T. Young Library; Medical Center Library; Law Library;
Special Collections and Archives; Art Library; Architecture Library; Music
Library; Agricultural Information Center; Education Library; and six
Science and Engineering Libraries. Combined holdings total 2.7 million
volumes. Young Library, opened in April 1998, houses 1.2 million volumes
emphasizing the social sciences, humanities, and life sciences. The System
has a staff of 65 librarians and 121 support staff and serves a student
body of 24,000. The library is as member of ARL, SOLINET, and the Center
for Research Libraries and is a regional depository of federal documents.

SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications ($30,000 minimum)
