Reference/Serials Librarian

Reports to the Director of Learning Resources, University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor.

Basic Responsibilities: Provide reference service, primarily on the second
floor (Serials, Indexes, Juvenile, and Curriculum collections), as well as
all electronic resources, including evening or weekend hours as assigned.
Provide leadership and development for the Serials, Juvenile and Curriculum
collections, including the microform collections. Make recommendations for
conversion of serials, as appropriate, to binding, microform, or other space
savings technologies in coordination with the Serials Technician.
Participate in Bibliographic Instruction within the library, working with
the Head of Reference to provide consistent and pertinent instruction. Work
with the Serials Technician to evaluate the Serials collection annually and
suggest revisions, additions, or withdrawals. Routinely analyze the
available physical space and work with Serials Technician to manage the
serials collection within that space. Work with the Electronic Services
librarian to coordinate access and selection of electronic journals, and to
monitor and evaluate advances in serials, archiving, and access. Provide
collection development for other assigned collections, under the direction
of the Head of Reference. Current assignment is Elementary Education,
Educational Psychology, Communications, and Psychology. Make recommendations
on microform access and storage equipment.

Qualifications: M.L.S degree from accredited ALA institution.

Preferred: Background and/or coursework in Serials, including current
methods and technologies. Interest in and commitment to public services,
reference, bibliographic instruction, and collection development.
Microcomputer, network, and Internet experience a plus.

Skills:  Service oriented, client centered librarian. Appreciation for and
ability to deal positively and sensitively with a variety of patrons.
Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral mediums.
Comfortable working knowledge of microcomputer hardware and software.
Professional and personal cooperative relationships with colleagues in the
library positively impacts the library's service to the patron.
Encouraging, facilitating, inquisitive, people friendly demeanor is
necessary. Will be required to be able to enhance a united effort for patron
interactive services
