Name of Unit:   Cataloging Department - YRL
Position Title: Head, Cataloging Department - YRL
Rank:           Associate Librarian/Librarian
Salary Range:   $40,248 - $68,112
Monthly Administrative Stipend:        $605.00/Month

DESCRIPTION OF UNIT:

The Cataloging Department, located in the Young Research library (YRL), is
the largest of the seven cataloging centers in the UCLA Library system
with a budget of over $2 million.  The Department is primarily responsible
for cataloging and preparing monographs, serials, audiovisual materials,
computer files (including selected Internet resources), and selected
government documents for YRL, which serves the social sciences, humanities
and education; for the College Library which serves undergraduates; and
for branch libraries serving the fine arts, music and management (in
excess of 87,400 titles/year.)  In addition to the Head, the Department is
staffed by 16 FTE librarians, 23 FTE staff, and student assistants.
Organized into 5 team-oriented sections -- Authority , Monographic
Cataloging, Rapid Cataloging, Records Management and Physical Processing,
and Serials Cataloging -- the Department uses OCLC as its cataloging
utility, with records loaded into and maintained in the integrated library
system of the UCLA Library.  The Library is currently implementing a new
integrated library system.  The Department is an active participant in
CONSER, BIBCO, and NACO, and in OCLC's Enhance and National Enhance
programs.

DUTIES:

Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian for
Collections and Technical Services, manages the operations of the
Cataloging Department including ongoing review and revision of policies
and procedures in a highly automated and changing environment. Sets goals
and establishes priorities and workflow, coordinating practices among
sections and providing specific decisions and interpretations as required.
Has general oversight responsibilities for all personnel matters,
providing leadership and guidance in staff training and development.
Directly supervises seven section heads. Assesses resource needs and
monitors and reconciles budget.  Leads the Department in making efficient
and innovative use of available tools, equipment and technologies, and
strives to create an environment that encourages and recognizes high
performance, facilitates effective communication at all levels, and
fosters teamwork.  Participates actively in the formulation of cataloging
and technical services policies as a member of the Advisory Committee on
Cataloging and the Collection Management Council.  Advises the Library
Administration on overall Library initiatives as a member of the
Administrative Conference.  Is expected to participate in cataloging
programs and standard setting on a national level.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated excellent managerial, planning, leadership, communication,
and supervisory skills and experience in an academic or research library
and in a complex library network environment.  Substantial and
progressively responsible experience with planning, budgeting, and
personnel management.  Direct knowledge of and experience with MARC21, the
Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, and the application and interpretation
of Library of Congress subject headings and classification.  Direct
knowledge of and experience with one of the national bibliographic
utilities, preferably OCLC.  Experience with a local integrated library
system.  Knowledge of cataloging and automated systems sufficient to take
an active role in implementing a new integrated library system and
associated workflow changes.  Knowledge of national cataloging standards,
and issues and trends in technical services and automation, including the
Program for Cooperative Cataloging.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Professional librarians at UCLA are academic appointees.  They are
entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation
leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits granted to
non-faculty academic personnel.  The University has an excellent

Appointees to the librarian series at UCLA shall have professional
backgrounds which demonstrate a high degree of creativity, teamwork, and
flexibility.  Such background will normally include a professional degree
from an accredited library and information science graduate program. In
addition to professional competence and quality of service within the
library, criteria for promotion include professional involvement outside
of the library, University and community service and scholarly activities.
