Reporting to the Head of Original and Special Materials Cataloging, the incumbent will provide full (or other appropriate level) original cataloging for new serial titles in a variety of print, non-print and digital formats in all subject areas. This position has responsibility for resolving problems and inconsistencies in bibliographic and holding records, deciding on appropriate bibliographic treatment of materials, and participating in library-wide planning and workflow design for serials processing. It also includes assigning, training and revising two support staff members involved in copy cataloging for serials; reviewing NACO series headings; overseeing serials catalog maintenance (withdrawals, transfers and reclass) and special projects; liaison work with the Serials Acquisition Services Department; and keeping abreast of methods, guidelines, and approaches for the bibliographic control of serials. Catalogers contribute to planning, policy and procedure development. The Original and Special Materials Cataloging Department (14.5 professionals and 12 support staff) provides cataloging for all serials, non-book formats and electronic resources, and specialized materials such as rare books, Middle East languages, art and architecture, as well as original cataloging for all subjects and formats. The Libraries currently receive over 60,000 serial titles and participate in CONSER. Requirements are: accredited MLS; excellent knowledge of serials cataloging using AACR2R, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, LC Subject Headings and Classification, MARC tagging, and bibliographic utilities including RLIN and OCLC; good oral and verbal communication skills; good organization skills; excellent problem-solving and analytical skills; a knowledge of one foreign language; and an aptitude for complex, analytical and detailed work. Highly desirable qualifications include: previous serials cataloging experience at a professional level; previous CONSER experience; experience in procedure development and writing documentation; knowledge of a second foreign language; and previous supervisory experience. Salary ranges (which will increase 7/1/00) are currently: Librarian I: $37,500 - $46,875; Librarian II: $39,500 - $53,325; Librarian III: $42,500 - $63,750.
