ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY

SERIALS CATALOGING UNIT SUPERVISOR
The University of Kansas Libraries
Lawrence, Kansas

The University of Kansas Libraries invites applications for the Head of the
Serials Cataloging Unit, one of several units within the Cataloging
Department.   The Unit has been an OCLC-contributing member, and an active
user of the MARC serials holdings format since 1985.  The Library is a NACO
participant and is currently using the Endeavor Voyager integrated library
system.  The Cataloging Department consists of 26 FTE faculty and staff and
is committed to the development of a team-based, continuous quality
improvement environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Head of the Serials Cataloging Unit manages the
operations of the Unit, which provides cataloging and holdings data for
serials, including a serials retrospective conversion project; supervises
Unit staff  (4.5 FTE).   Serves as a member of the Cataloging Department's
management team, which coordinates and plans the Department's cataloging
activities and directs the Department's team development efforts.
Coordinates the Unit's activities with those of other staff in the
Department and other departments.  Serves as a resource person for serials
cataloging policies for other library staff and in library-wide forums.
Engages in service and scholarly activities.   Reports to the Assistant Dean
(Processing and Collections).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  MLS from an ALA-accredited program; successful
management and supervisory experience; strong knowledge of serials
operations, including serials acquisitions, access and serials control;
ability to work effectively in a team-based, production-oriented
environment, including the ability to engage staff in a continual process of
change and improvement; effective oral and written communications skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   knowledge of and working experience with
national serials cataloging standards (CONSER and MARC serial holdings
format); experience in an academic or research library; knowledge of one or
more Western European languages.

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT:  Full-time, tenure-track appointment, available as soon
as possible.

SALARY RANGE:  $40,000-$50,000, dependent upon qualifications

BENEFITS: 22 days vacation and 12 days sick leave per year; several paid
holidays; group health and life insurance options; choice of four retirement
programs; eligibility for sabbatical leave.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: Librarians at the University of Kansas are members of
the University faculty and are appointed to the ranks of Librarian I,
Librarian II, or Librarian III, dependent on professional experience in the
field of librarianship.  Librarians participate in the Library Faculty
Assembly and are members of the University Faculty Council.  Librarians are
evaluated annually first and foremost on the performance of professional
responsibilities.  In addition, librarians are expected to participate in,
and are evaluated on, professional service and research.

ENVIRONMENT:  The University Libraries constitute a major academic and
research resource supporting approximately 25,000 students and 1,300
faculty.  The University is located in Lawrence, a diverse community of more
than 75,000 set in the rolling hills of northeast Kansas, 40 miles from
Kansas City.  Lawrence and KU offer a wide range of cultural and
recreational activities, and the Libraries play a vital role in the
intellectual life of the community.  The Libraries' collections comprise
approximately 3.3 million volumes and 27,000 current serial titles, housed
in seven library facilities in Lawrence and one library in suburban Kansas
City.  The Libraries have a budget of $14 million and a staff of 71 library
faculty and professional staff, 76 paraprofessionals, and 80 FTE of student
workers.

Consortium, and is a member of OCLC.  The University Libraries, along with
the Law Library and the Medical Center Library, are currently using the
