                        METADATA LIBRARIAN

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Reporting to the Coordinator for Bibliographic Control
and Electronic Resource Services, this position will be part of the
Original Cataloging unit and will have responsibility for providing
organization of and access to materials in a variety of formats with an
emphasis on electronic resources, including participating in the planning
and implementation of metadata for digitization projects.  This position
is also responsible for monitoring the development of metadata and
emerging standards, evaluating new approaches for organizing and providing
access to information in the electronic environment, and making
recommendations for implementation.  This position will serve as a liaison
to other departments; provide outreach in regional, national, and
international bibliographic networks; provide technical assistance to the
Copy Cataloging and Projects units; participate in the planning,
development, and evaluation of services; prepare various reports and
communications; and aid the coordinator in department operations as
assigned or requested.

Bibliographic Control and Electronic Resource Services is comprised of
faculty and support staff in the University Libraries� Morgan Library.
This department is organized into four units: Original Cataloging, Copy
Cataloging, Database Maintenance, and Projects and is responsible for the
bibliographic control of materials in a variety of formats and for
applying organizational techniques to new forms of information to enhance
access for users.  The department also builds and maintains the online
catalog and authorities files to support retrieval by users, employing
utilities, and vendors in the provision of programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: ALA accredited MLS or its equivalent; knowledge
of the current cataloging standards (AACR2r, MARC formats, and Library of
Congress Classification and Subject Headings); demonstrated interest in
the issues and standards related to cataloging, metadata such as Dublin
Core, and information retrieval; the ability to work independently, in a
team, or in a project- oriented environment; possess excellent written and
oral communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to meet
tenure and promotion requirements, including research and service.
Desired: Previous cataloging experience; knowledge of one or more foreign
languages; and experience with a bibliographic utility and/or integrated
system (preferably OCLC and Innopac).

RANK AND SALARY:  Twelve-month tenure track faculty appointment with
contract reviewed annually until tenure is granted. Salary minimum of
$36,000.

UNIVERSITY DESCRIPTION:  Colorado State University was established as the
land-grant institution of the State of Colorado in 1870.  Enrollment is
approximately 22,000 students with graduate and professional students
comprising about 18% of the total.  The University employs about 1,500
academic faculty, 1,000 administrative professionals and 2,000 classified
staff.  Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins, a dynamic
community with a population of approximately 106,000 situated 65 miles
north of Denver in the foothills of the Rockies.  Rocky Mountain National
Park, Poudre Canyon, and other mountain recreation areas are nearby.
