POSITION:                       Catalog Librarian

APPOINTMENT RANK:       Assistant or Associate Professor

SALARY:         Assistant Professor minimum  $30,000
                        Associate Professor minimum $37,000

AVAILABLE:                      October 1, 2000

The University of Tennessee, Libraries, Technical Services Team is
seeking
a talented and flexible cataloging professional.  The librarian in this
non-traditional cataloging position will provide advice and consultation
to
cataloging paraprofessionals and will collaborate with professional
colleagues in exploring and implementing innovative bibliographic
description and access techniques.  There are six professionals and
twenty-six paraprofessionals in the Team's four units -- Acquisitions,
Cataloging, Serials, and Systems.  Many have been trained to do both
copy
and original cataloging in all formats, languages and subject areas
using
OCLC and the Libraries' Horizon integrated library system.  The Team
processes approximately 45,000 volumes annually.  Recently, the
Libraries
began using YBP and OCLC's PromptCat services for some cataloging and
physical processing.  The Libraries are involved in Internet cataloging,
the CORC project, electronic dissertations and theses, and other
electronic
resource initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Participates in the formulation of local cataloging policies and
procedures
*Keeps abreast of national developments and new technologies in
cataloging
and
  shares that knowledge with the Libraries
*Assists with problem solving
*Prepares various reports
*Participates in special projects
*Serves as a resource person for cataloging paraprofessionals
This librarian reports to the Team Leader for Technical Services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree; several years' cataloging
experience in an academic or research library; ability to work with a
broad
range of subjects and formats; detailed knowledge of or experience with
Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, MARC 21 formats, Library of Congress
Classification and Subject Headings, and authority control procedures;
excellent communication skills; awareness of national and international
trends in bibliographic control; the ability to interact positively and
productively with library colleagues..

Preferred: Knowledge of one or more foreign languages, knowledge of and
experience in organization of electronic resources and use of non-MARC
metadata schemes.

 BENEFITS: Librarians at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have
faculty rank and status and are appointed for twelve months. This is a
tenure track appointment. Library faculty must meet University
requirements
for promotion and tenure. Annual leave is accrued at the rate of two
days
per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month. Faculty have
their choice of a state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF. Non-refundable
contributions to either retirement plan are paid for the employee by the
University. Group health and life insurance plans are available. Tuition
remission is available for all university employees; partial
undergraduate
tuition remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT
employees.

ENVIRONMENT: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a Carnegie Research

University Archives and Special Collections.  A fifth branch, the Social
Work Library, is located in Nashville.  Over three hundred  persons are
employed, including 49 librarians, 8 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150
students.  UTK Libraries is a member of the Association of Research
Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center for Research Libraries.  The UTK
Libraries offers a Web-based information system and access to a variety
of
electronic information sources.
