Position Title: Social Sciences Cataloger (Search re-opened)

Classification: Assistant or Associate Librarian

Assistant Librarian salary range: $36,300 - $43,600
Associate Librarian salary range: $41,800 - $50,200
Compensation will be based on relevant qualifications and
experience.

Location: Catalog Department

Responsible to: Coordinator, MARC Unit

General Description:

Responsible for the original cataloging at the appropriate
level of material in the social sciences both to
accommodate dynamic needs of collection development and to
satisfy the Department's commitment to the prevention of
backlog development. Emphasis placed on professional
judgment and broad subject interest, both intra and
extra-mural. Strong knowledge of at least one Western
European language essential; German or Spanish preferred.

Duties:

1.Performs original cataloging of social science material
according to AACR2 cataloging rules and local department
policies and procedures in a variety of Western European
languages.
2.Participates in the NACO and BIBCO programs as
appropriate in support of Catalog Department objectives.
3.Curiosity and commitment to learn and make use of
emerging technologies.
4.Contributes to the intellectual and research environment
of Stanford University through active participation on
Stanford University Library committees, communication with
relevant curators, awareness and sensitivity to use of OPAC
metadata by University patrons, and interest in campus
intellectual life.
5.Tracks and participates in national cataloging
developments related to the social sciences and personal
interests.
6.Supervises the work of the paraprofessional assigned to
this subject area.
7.May be assigned expert partner duties.
8.Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

1.Thorough familiarity with cataloging procedures and
principles as defined in AACR2, the MARC bibliographic
record, and the Holdings and Authorities formats.
2.Academic background in the Social Sciences or related
fields.
3.Advanced knowledge of at least one modern, Western
European language; German or Spanish strongly preferred.
4.Professional interest in search engines, metadata
concepts, and emerging technologies.
5.Excellent analytic and problem solving skills.
6.High level of proficiency using PC-based applications
(Windows, word processing, spreadsheets) and other computer
applications (email, Internet, Integrated Library Systems).
7.Ability to work independently and as a team member in a
dynamic environment on a variety of simultaneous workflows.
8.Ability to lead and supervise others in a
positive and constructive fashion emphasizing the team
approach, as well as the ability to work with a diverse
group.
9.Consistent accuracy and attention to detail while
maintaining a very high level of productivity.
10.Very good oral and written communication skills.
11.Masters degree in library science from an ALA
accredited institution, or its recognized equivalent.
