Review of applications to begin August 1, 2000 DESCRIPTION: The University of Kentucky Libraries seeks a creative, patron-oriented serials librarian to serve as Serials Acquisitions Librarian. The successful candidate will manage acquisitions services related to print, non-print, and electronic serials for the William T. Young Library. The University Libraries will be migrating from NOTIS to the Voyager system in June 2000. The Serials Acquisitions Librarian will be actively involved in the implementation activities associated with the migration. RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Serials Team Leader, the Serials Acquisitions Librarian will directly supervise a staff of 4, with the possibility of additional temporary staff and student assistants; coordinate serials acquisitions services within the William T. Young Library; serve as liaison to selectors on issues related to serials subscriptions; lead staff in planning and monitoring the unit's workflow and procedures; assist staff with complex problem solving; participate in Serials Team planning, administration, and move toward team-based management; interact with Preservation staff on binding issues; serve on library committees; be an active participant in system-wide decentralization efforts; keep abreast of serials acquisitions trends, evaluate the potential use of new services and technologies. Special projects will include implementing the migration from NOTIS to the Voyager library management system; completing the conversion of check-in and holdings records from manual to online format. QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED): ALA-accredited MLS; 2 or more years of professional serials experience; recent experience with an integrated library system including automated serials control; ability to work in a complex and changing environment; strong supervisory skills; evidence of organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills; effective oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and in teams; ability to view issues from a system-wide perspective, foster teamwork, and stimulate cross-functional collaboration; evidence of ability to meet requirements for promotion and tenure and commitment to ongoing professional service and activity. QUALIFICATIONS (PREFERRED): Experience with Voyager and/or NOTIS; experience with OCLC or other national bibliographic utility; relevant experience in an academic research institution; knowledge of serials cataloging; reading knowledge of one or more western European languages. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The University of Kentucky Libraries includes the William T. Young Library which opened in April 1998, housing social science, humanities and life sciences collections; the Medical Center Library, Law Library, Special Collections and Archives, the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library (opening Fall 2000), Agricultural Information Center, Architecture Library, Education Library, and the six science and Engineering libraries. Combined holdings total more than 2.7 million volumes. The System has a staff of 65 librarians and 121 support staff and serves a student body of 27,000. The library is a member of ARL, SOLINET, and the Center for Research Libraries and is a regional depository of federal documents. SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications, $31,000 minimum.
