MARC Database Manager
(Librarian I or II)

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for the management of MARC Bibliographic,
Authorities and Holdings Format records according to national standards
within MIT Libraries' local system. Takes leadership role in planning for
and enabling the utilization of various external source records within the
local system. Serves as technical liaison for MARC-based vendor projects
and facilitates the integration of MARC and other metadata received from
external providers. Works collaboratively with the Library Systems Manager
and with monograph and serials cataloging staff to ensure the integrity of
MARC records management, including the setup of system parameters for record
loading, data integrity and indexing. Manages the formulation and
coordination of software testing that impacts the MARC database and may
write/review specifications for local system enhancements. Oversees the
management of vendor-supplied and local system-generated quality control
reports related to bibliographic data and post-cataloging authorities
processing. Assists with projects involving migration of MARC data within
the existing local system and to a new Integrated Library System (ILS),
expected to be implemented by July 2001. Supervises student and support
staff responsible for database quality control and oversees database
maintenance work conducted in the local system cataloging module.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in library or information science
from an ALA-accredited program. Substantive knowledge of USMARC
bibliographic, authorities, and holdings standards. Knowledge of AACR2, LC
classification, LCSH, and authority control. Experience with an automated
bibliographic utility such as OCLC or RLIN and an integrated library system
required. Demonstrated interest and aptitude for information technologies
and a high degree of computer literacy. Strong communication, analytical,
and organizational skills. Ability to provide effective supervision of
support and student staff. Evidence of initiative, flexibility, and ability
to work collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment. (Three years
professional experience required for appointment at Librarian II level.)

HIRING SALARY: $36,000 minimum (Librarian I) $41,000 minimum (Librarian
II). Actual salary will depend on experience.

The MIT Libraries include five major subject libraries (architecture and
planning; engineering; humanities; science; management and social sciences)
and several branch libraries in specialized subject areas. The Libraries
contain more than 2.3 million printed volumes, over 19,000 serial
subscriptions, and extensive collections of microforms, maps, slides,
photographs, sound recordings, printed music, manuscripts, motion pictures,
and videotapes. The Libraries' automated system is Geac Advance. The
public catalog, Barton, is available within the Libraries and on the campus
network. The Libraries' webpage (http://libraries.mit.edu/) presents
information about library services, access to numerous databases, and links
to pertinent Internet resources. MIT Libraries maintain membership in the
Association of Research Libraries, the Boston Library Consortium, and OCLC
through NELINET.

Bibliographic Access Services is one of three collection services
departments. The staff of 14 people includes 5 librarians and 9 FTE support
staff who are engaged in monograph cataloging and the maintenance of
bibliographic and holdings data for Barton, the MIT Libraries' online system.
